IGNANT: Between Light and Dark
Chiaroscuro, which translates from Italian as light-dark, is a visual technique that uses the contrast between light and the shadow to create depth, shape and drama. For Taupe, Berlin-based studio IGNANT designed architectural spaces and sculptural assemblages in CGI that create a sense of chiaroscuro through their interaction. “We thought it would be interesting to explore an inverted chiaroscuro technique”, the studio explains, “not how to create a sense of space and depth through chiaroscuro, but rather, how we can create a sense of chiaroscuro through the design of a space.” Light refracted through each architectural form casts a unique glow upon the sculpture in the image that it is paired with. These are encounters in which the unknown constitutes the known—where dark meets light, color dances.
