COLORS AND THE KIDS – CATK
CATK: Between Harmony and Dissonance
Within color theory, color harmony refers to the quality of aesthetically pleasing color combinations. This chromatic consonance is historically created through combinations of complementary colors, split-complementary colors, color triads, and analogous colors. To Colors and the Kids, harmonious colors are simply: “an arrangement of colors that don’t confuse people”. From this starting point, they embarked on a visual research project informed by something else entirely.
“Thinking about color harmony, we asked ourselves, are there any alternatives to harmony?” explains the studio. “Would it be possible to find beauty in color combinations that do not follow any rules established within the color theory? How do chaos and noise inform color combinations? Looking for unfamiliar color combinations, creating something that can’t be predicted as beautiful by color theory, researching what lies in between harmony and dissonance... Or are we automatically being led to colors that fit the definition of being harmonious?”
Colors and the Kids is a Berlin-based creative studio that specializes in the fields of design, motion, and music.
